Penthouse

Residential Remodel

Park Avenue Intercontinental

The Penthouse is an extensive, multi-room remodel that includes foyer, guest bed and bath, master bath, library and bar conversion, with new floors throughout.

The gutted foyer features a reimagined look that transforms what was once dark with many doors, low ceiling and various textured floors into an elegant, bright and welcoming space. Rerouted ductwork makes room for a new round silver leafed niche housing a crystal chandelier. Crown moulding and retrofitted recessed LED lighting make a dramatic statement along the walls, refaced with custom paneled millwork. A jib mounting set into the paneling hides the secret door to the guest bathroom.

jib (noun)

a door made flush with a wall and often disguised by continuing the finishings or decorations of the wall across its surface

The library entrance is widened to accommodate custom mahogany doors and side lights. Opposite, the doors to the guest bedroom and laundry facilities now mirror those of the entrance. A chrome and stingray console table, original art and accessories complete the look.
An unused guest bedroom and closet are transformed into a library and bar with the foyer’s marble flooring continuing here. At our clients’ request we preserve an existing Murphy bed with bookcase and create a gallery wall. A coffered ceiling with track lighting illuminates their vast collection of artwork, and the recessed LED lights create more depth, highlighting the millwork installed on the ceiling. To match the custom cabinetry, the Murphy bookcase is refinished with the same solid oak, finished with a four step staining process. Additional built-in cabinetry lines the former closet and includes a matching paneled mini fridge beneath the exotic granite countertop. Mercury tile backsplash and custom glass shelving adorn the walls. Finishing the space are two wingback chairs, a Persian rug, silk drapery and the owners’ collection of artwork and antique books.
Overnight guests feel as if they just stepped into a boutique hotel. The room is revitalized with an all black and white theme. Wall-to-wall pleated, sheer white drapery softens the morning light. It’s the perfect foil to the tone-on-tone onyx Schumacher wallpaper, an elegant backdrop to a clean and modern studded platform bed. Mirrored nightstands and hand blown glass table lamps serve as accents in the space.
The guest bathroom gets a boost of personality with custom cabinetry designed to add an architectural flair. Walls boast Italian Carrera marble with recess and vanity backsplash adorned with mosaic tile in a flower pattern. Other design highlights include a wall mounted faucet, oval vessel sink and 1930s Naval sconces—subtle nods to some of the more sophisticated hallmarks of bygone eras.
The master’s bath, now a bright and airy retreat, showcases the power of contrast between its custom Wenge wood cabinetry and the white marble throughout. The natural chevron patterns in the Carrera add a sense of movement. Owners enjoy a luscious spa experience with the remote controlled shower system that includes a rain shower, hand nozzle and fixed wall mounted spray. Polished chrome rivet mirrors and other fixtures gleam luxuriously.
